Fanya juu Terraces Improve Maize (Zea mays L.) and Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) Grain Yields on Hardsetting Soils of Semi-arid Eastern Kenya

چکیده
Aims: Fanya juu terraces are constructed by digging a ditch and throwing the soil up-slope with sole purpose of maintaining an embankment to slow down runoff flow. The effect on crop yields along slope varies type. aim this study was determine maize (Zea mays L.) bean (Phaseolus vulgaris how these differ positions depth ditches.
Study Design: Split-split plot design four replications.
Place Duration Study: trial established Luvisols in Mua location, Machakos County Eastern Kenya at 37o15’E 1o29’S during both long rain (LR) short (SR) seasons 2014 2015 (February March 2015).
Methodology: Treatments consisted three depths (60 cm, 30 cm 0 (control)) main plots cropping systems (maize/bean intercrop, bean) sub plots. Grain were compared across upper, middle lower using analysis variance means separated least significant difference P≤0.05.
Results: There differences grain interactions position (P=0.004) season (P<0.001). Higher realized when ditches than control. Yields increased from upper 49.8% 60 41.6%. Average treatments significantly higher control but non-significant those ditch. Significant (P=0.037) observed position. obtained positions. (P=0.033) also found depths, seasons.
Conclusion: results indicate that had hardsetting soils. recommends construction intensive management for improved production soils marginal areas.

متن کاملMaize (Zea mays L.).
Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation is an effective method for introducing genes into maize. In this chapter, we describe a detailed protocol for genetic transformation of the maize genotype Hi II. Our starting plant material is immature embryos cocultivated with an Agrobacterium strain carrying a standard binary vector. In addition to step-by-step laboratory transformation proced...
متن کاملUnderstanding yields in alley cropping maize (Zea mays L.) and Cassia siamea Lam. under semi-arid conditions in Machakos, eastern Kenya.
Six seasons of experiments in Machakos, Kenya, revealed that above about 150 mm of rainfall, maize yields per row in alley cropped "replacement" agroforestry (AF) plots, of Cassia siamea Lam. and maize (Zea mays, cv. Katumani Composite B), may be expected to exceed those in the control (sole maize) plots. Such yields were insufficient to compensate for the area "lost" to the hedgerows. Below ab...

intercropping systems are one of the best approaches in development of sustainable agriculture. based on this purpose, the present study was conducted to evaluate effect of strip intercropping on maize and bean growth analysis and their yield during 2009. the experiment was set up in a completely randomized block with 3 replications and 6 treatments based on replacement design. the treatments w...
متن کاملSymbiotic Efficiency of Native Rhizobia Nodulating Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Soils of Western Kenya
This study was conducted to determine the abundance and symbiotic efficiency of native rhizobia nodulating common bean in Kisumu and Kakamega, Kenya. Soil sampling was carried out in three farms that had been used for growing common bean for at least two seasons and one fallow land with no known history of growing common bean or inoculation. Abundance of soil rhizobia and symbiotic efficiency (...
